Source of Power – Mental and Physical

E-mail Print PDF
In Essence SA JKA Karate is a practical art of self-defense aiming at controlling the enemy.

The most important source of Karate power is mental. For the maximum use of physical power, it is necessary to have excellent mental control that demands the following absolutely necessary elements:
Stable Emotions
A Calm Physical State
Appropriate Focus of Mental Energy

The above necessary elements not only apply to SA JKA Karate only but also to "on the edge" performance sports, such as motor racing or golf.

STATE OF MIND

TSUKI NO KOKORO – A mind like the Moon

It conveys the idea of clarity or awareness; free of thoughts or obstructions that may cloud the mind and hamper effective actions. The moon, on a clear night, reflects the light given off by the sun and is thus easily seen on earth. However, at times the clear light of the moon is obstructed by clouds giving an impression similar to that of a pond whose reflection is obscured by ripples. In this sense, the clouds represent thoughts that freeze the mind, making it unable to respond freely to the stimuli presented.

KARATE NI SENTE NASHI – In Karate there is no First Attack.

The wise Karate-ka must acquire the ability to read the opponents body language allowing him to commit himself first – so that he may, in fairness, respond with an effective counter measure.

IKKEN HISSATSU – One Punch, Death Blow

This saying may sound severe. But taken in its context, it emanates from the vigorous Japanese/ Okinawan systems that had to deal with life and death confrontations against real-life enemies. Extreme concentration of force is the aim. For example, even today the true Shotokan expert will train his Tokui-Waza (special technique), where he is capable of rendering his attacker harmless.

This is the major aim of SA JKA Karate. That is to train sincerely, regularly and intelligently so that in the event of being attacked, his hands or feet will have the devastating effect of a lethal weapon. Competing in a sporting event such as the Olympics where protective rules and equipment are used is a secondary aim of any top SA JKA Karate practitioner.
